The wood duck is a medium-sized perching duck.A typical adult is from 47 to 54 cm (19 to 21 in) in length with a wingspan of between 66 and 73 cm (26 and 29 in).
The clutch size is between 6 and 15, and the incubation period is about 30 days. The young are precocial. They venture from the cavity nest at one day old and are cared for by the mother for about 60 days. The young have a very high mortality rate. Wood ducks normally live 3 to 4 years. Mandarin ducks are also monogamous.
During nesting season, the female lays a clutch of 7-12 eggs with each of them measuring 4.9–6 cm (1.9–2.4 in) in length and 3.4–4.4 cm (1.3–1.7 in) in width. Incubation lasts for 24-27 days and the nestlings leave after around 1-2 days. A gadwall can only raise one brood a season [2]
Mallard ducks are used extensively in the production of balut—female (left) and male (right). Balut (/ b ə ˈ l uː t / bə-LOOT, / ˈ b ɑː l uː t / BAH-loot; [1] also spelled as balot) is a fertilized developing egg embryo that is boiled or steamed and eaten from the shell.
Vagrants have been recorded in North America. On lakes it prefers areas around the edges, often under small trees. The smew breeds in May and lays 7–11 cream-colored eggs, incubated by the female for 26–28 days. Ducklings leave the nest soon after hatching and learn to fly within about 10 weeks. [12]
The hen alone incubates the eggs for 22 to 24 days before they hatch. The precocial downy chicks are then led by the female to the nearest body of water, where they feed on dead insects on the water surface. The chicks fledge in 46 to 47 days after hatching, but stay with the female until she has completed moulting. [12]
Average egg size is a breadth of 42.6–44.0 mm (1.68–1.73 in), a length of 58.1–60.6 mm (2.29–2.39 in) and a weight of 61.2–66.6 g (2.16–2.35 oz). [2] The incubation period ranges from 28 to 32 days. The female does all the incubating and is abandoned by the male about 1 to 2 weeks into incubation.
