The Canterbury A&P Association was formed a few weeks later on 23 January 1863, with Robert Wilkin as its first president. George Huntington Hartford (September 5, 1833 – August 29, 1917) headed the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P) from 1878 to 1917. During this period, A&P created the concept of the chain grocery store and expanded into the country's largest retailer.
