Big's Backyard Ultra is the original backyard ultra, invented by Gary "Lazarus Lake" Cantrell of Bell Buckle, Tennessee. Participants run a 4.167-mile loop every hour, and are eliminated if they fail to complete a loop in an hour. The path of the loop is on trails during the day and along a road after dark.
Bell Buckle is located in northeastern Bedford County at (35.590749, -86.354047 Tennessee State Routes 82 and 269 cross at the town's center. TN 82 leads east 8 miles (13 km) to Beechgrove and Interstate 24, and west 5 miles (8 km) to U.S. Route 231 at a point 7 miles (11 km) north of Shelbyville, the county seat.
The original backyard ultra is Big's Backyard Ultra, which is held on Cantrell's property in Bell Buckle, Tennessee and is named after his dog. [4] Today, Big's is an invitational race where the top competitors participate based on wins in a bracket of the various American and international backyard ultras. [3]
