The fair was celebrated for the first time around harvest time from November 5 to November 20, 1828, as a showcase of the state's produce and livestock. During that time it was in direct competition with the fairs of Acapulco, Jalapa and San Juan de los Lagos.

Feria or Ferial Weekday — a weekday in Ordinary Time on which no solemnity, feast or memorial happens to be observed. The equivalent in the Extraordinary Form would be a IV Class Ferial, and in the older Tridentine forms would be Minor Ferials.

San Marcos is a town and a municipality in the Carazo Department of Nicaragua. It is located 45 km (28 mi) south of the capital Managua. The municipality has a population of 33,303 (2022 estimate). San Marcos' climate enables the production of coffee and a large variety of tropical flowers and fruits.
