It was originally named Glasgow County, for James Glasgow, North Carolina Secretary of State from 1777 to 1798. In 1799, Glasgow's involvement in military land grant frauds forced him to resign and leave the state. Glasgow County was then renamed Greene County in honor of Nathanael Greene, one of General Washington's right-hand men.

Snow Hill Historic District is a national historic district located at Snow Hill, Greene County, North Carolina.The district encompasses 229 contributing buildings, a contributing site (St. Barnabas Church Cemetery), two contributing structures, and a contributing object (Clara Ernart gravestone) in the central business district and surrounding residential sections of Snow Hill.
The current designation of NC 91 first appeared on the 1948 North Carolina state transportation map, travelling from US 258 and NC 102 north of Snow Hill to US 264 north of Walstonburg.
