The book is written like a biology book, describing the habitat of the mythical creatures known as gnomes (Dutch: kabouter).In the book, Huygen and Poortvliet say they've spent at least twenty years observing them and call their study the "first work of consequence on the subject to be published since Wunderlich's bulky and dubious treatise De Hominibus Parvisimis appeared in 1580".
They contain fictional stories and guides about how gnomes live in harmony with their environment, such as what a gnome has in his first aid kit and how a gnome's house is built. The books were written by the Dutch author Wil Huygen and illustrator Rien Poortvliet , though they have claimed that parts were written by a gnome called David.

Willibrord Joseph Huygen (23 June 1922 – 14 January 2009) was a Dutch book author. He is best known for the picture books on gnomes, illustrated by Rien Poortvliet. [1] [2] [3] Huygen was born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. The seventh of ten children, his primary occupation was that of a physician. He was married and had five children.

Born in Schiedam, Poortvliet was best known for his drawings [2] of animals and for "Gnomes", a famous series of illustrated books with text by Wil Huygen. [3]Poortvliet did not attend art school and his family discouraged him from becoming an artist: `My family thought that artists were, you know, a little bit dangerous, all those naked women, all that drinking all night."

First published in 1926, the novel is set in Cieszyn Silesia and features the titular gnome, Kacperek. According to some literary scholars, it is considered "one of the most beautiful Polish fairy tales".
