Mackay (/ məˈkaɪ / [ 3 ][ 4 ][ 5 ]) is a city in the Mackay Region on the eastern or Coral Sea coast of Queensland, Australia. [ 6 ][ 7 ] It is located about 970 kilometres (603 mi) north of Brisbane, on the Pioneer River. Mackay is described as being in either Central Queensland or North Queensland, as these regions are not precisely defined.
History. In 1992, the Laguna Quays resort opened as a luxury resort. It had cost $250 million. A 70-berth marina opened in 1993. However, in 1995, the resort went bankrupt owing around $200 million. [7] By 2009, the Mackay Regional Council was owed over $2 million for rates.
