    A Lesson Before Dying has nothing to do with Mexico and was set in 1940's Louisiana. I am not sure what novel has been described, but it is definetly not A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines. The sources cited from Spark Notes at the bottom of the page seems to describe the correct novel.
