James is an incorporated township in the Canadian province of Ontario, located in Timiskaming District. [1] [3] The primary community within the township is Elk Lake, which is located at the junction of Ontario Highway 65 and Ontario Highway 560. [4] The township had a population of 348 in the 2021 Canadian Census, [5] compared to 420 in 2016. [2]
Within this vast uninhabited region, Highway 560 is the closest public road to the highest point in Ontario, Ishpatina Ridge. [5] At Elk Lake, the route provides access to Makobe - Grays River Provincial Park and then meets Highway 65, with which it shares a 1.0-kilometre (0.62 mi) concurrency.

The river heads north, takes in several tributaries and reaches Inlet Bay on Gowganda Lake and the community of Gowganda. The river exits the lake at Outlet Bay, passes under Ontario Highway 560 and continues northeast. It reaches The Forks at Matachewan and takes in the major left tributary West Montreal River.
It travels through the communities of Elk Lake, Kenabeek and New Liskeard. The route's continuation into Quebec does not have a provincial route number, but has developed the name 'Rue Ontario' by the local town of Notre-Dame-du-Nord. Rue Ontario ends at Route 101 in Notre-Dame-du-Nord, 2.6 kilometres (1.6 mi) east of the provincial border.
