The Guatemala national football team represents Guatemala in international matches and it falls under the direct command of Federacion Nacional de Futbol de Guatemala. Association Football was established in 1919 and Guatemala became a FIFA member in 1946, and got their CONCACAF affiliation in 1961.
The team was split into two sides, blue and white. With time, clubs were made and eventually the Guatemala national team, nicknamed "la Azul y Blanco" (the blue and white), was created in 1921. Guatemala had its first game on 16 September 1921, in the Independence Centenary Games held in Guatemala City, against Honduras.
The club was founded on May 17, 1936, by workers of the Ayuntamiento of the Guatemala City municipality, hence the name Municipal.
