The county was organized December 31, 1838, [2] from the Platte Purchase, [3] named for the Platte River. ( Platte is derived from the French word for a low, shallow, or intermittent stream.) New Market is a census designated place in northern Platte County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. [3] It lies within the Kansas City metropolitan area. The population was 88 at the 2020 census. The community is located on Missouri Route 371 about 1.5 miles south of the Platte-Buchanan county line.
A post office called Northmoor was established in 1927, and remained in operation until 1947. [5] The community's name is an amalgamation of Moore, the name of a first settler, and "north", a directional name relative to the community's location from Kansas City.
Dearborn is located in northern Platte County and centered about one-half mile south of the Platte-Buchanan county line. The Dearborn Reservoir is just across the county line to the north. The community is on Routes Z and Y one mile east of U.S. Route 71. Bee Creek flows past the west side of the community. [9]
