A recliner Recliner aboard a business jet. A recliner is an armchair or sofa that reclines when the occupant lowers the chair's back and raises its front. [1] [2] It has a backrest that can be tilted back, and often a footrest that may be extended by means of a lever on the side of the chair, or may extend automatically when the back is reclined.
It is the oldest manufacturer of reclining chairs in the U.S. [3] After the company filed for bankruptcy in 2010, it shuttered its facilities in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Martinsville, Virginia, then restarted manufacturing at the plant in Morristown, Tennessee, in 2011, for manufacture of the Barcalounger chair. [4]
The chair was a success; they held a contest to name it—La-Z-Boy was the winner. [3] In 1969, after years primarily as a manufacturer of recliners, La-Z-Boy started designing other products including reclining sofas, sleep sofas and modular groups. [3] 1981 sales were $150 million. [4]
Where an ultra-lightweight manual chair may weigh under 10 kg, the largest outdoor power-chairs may weigh 200 kg or more. Smaller power chairs often have four wheels, with front or rear wheel drive, but large outdoor designs commonly have six wheels, with small wheels at front and rear and somewhat larger powered wheels in the centre.
