The Otay Mountain Wilderness is a U.S. wilderness area in San Diego County, California, 12 miles east of the community of Otay Mesa and just north of the Mexico–United States border. Some parts of the wilderness area rise quickly from sea level, reaching a peak of just over 3,500 feet (1,100 m) at the summit of Otay Mountain.
The name "Otay" comes from the Kumeyaay word otai, which means "brushy". [3]On March 16, 1991, a Hawker Siddeley HS-125 airplane carrying seven members of singer Reba McEntire's band, plus her business manager and two pilots, crashed into the side of the mountain after taking off from nearby Brown Field Municipal Airport, killing all ten on board.
On the western side of the mountain lies Lower Otay Lake and Otay Mesa, with Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility and other detention centers and law enforcement properties lying on the southwest slope of the mountain. They are located in 44 states (excepting Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, and Rhode Island) and Puerto Rico. The NPS has oversight of 43,890,500 acres (68,578.9 sq mi; 177,619 km 2) of wilderness at 61 locations.
The West Malpais Wilderness was created on December 31, 1987, with the passage of Public Law 100-225 by the 100th Congress. An important piece of public lands legislation, the law created not only the West Malpais Wilderness, but also created the 231,230 acre El Malpais National Conservation Area, the El Malpais National Monument, the Cebolla Wilderness, and the Masau Trail.
