The Kothduwa temple, or Koth Duwa Raja Maha Viharaya, is a Buddhist temple located on Kothduwa Island on the Madu Ganga in southern Sri Lanka. The island is located in Galle District of the Southern Province approximately 35 km (22 mi) north of Galle and 88 km (55 mi) south of Colombo .
Chaitya premises is called the Somawathiya Rajamaha Viharaya. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] The Somawathiya Chaitya [ 5 ] is located within the Somawathiya National Park [ 6 ] on the left bank of the Mahaweli River , [ 7 ] and is believed to have been built long before the time of Dutugamunu enshrining the right canine Relic of the tooth of the Buddha .
The temple has been formally recognized by the Government as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka. [ 1 ] Uruwala , Maligatenna , Warana , Miriswatta and Pilikuththuwa cave temples, situated in the vicinity of the Koskandawala temple are said to have been formed from one major temple complex in the early Anuradhapura period .
