Academic performance is rated from 1.00 being excellent to 5.00 as failed. Grades from 1.00 to 3.00 are separated by increments of 0.25, while 3.00 is followed immediately by 4.00 and then 5.00. Some professors use 0.50 as increments instead, and some colleges, particularly the College of Engineering do not give 4.00 grades.
The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to the degree of chemical engineering: Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BS ChE) — five-year program leading to the understanding of transport processes, chemical engineering thermodynamics and their applications to unit operations design, thermodynamics and reaction kinetics.
In the 1950s, new academic units and degree programs were established. Another major reform, the General Education (G.E.) Program, was introduced in 1959. The G.E. Program became a series of core courses prescribed for all students at the undergraduate level. Most of these courses were being taught at the then College of Liberal Arts.
UPOU was established in 1995 by the UP Board of Regents as the evolution of the UP Distance Education Program. UPOU offers accredited graduate and undergraduate degrees as well as diploma courses and Professional Teaching Certificates (PTC) to Filipino and international students in more than 70 countries. [5]

The National Institute of Physics (NIP) was established in 1983 by Presidential Executive Order No. 889 [1] which transformed the Department of Physics of the College of Arts and Sciences into one of the seven research and academic institutes of the University of the Philippines Diliman - College of Science.
