Charcoal Powder Tips. Hello all, I have been playing around with charcoal powder recently but have been having a difficult time getting a consistent result. It is either away too heavy or non-existent. Any tips? Don’t have a lot of experience with charcoal. Looking forward to doing more.

My instructor, instructing you with instructions on starting a charcoal drawing. The same principals can apply to the start of any applied medium, really. If you're going for a sketchbook you'll need some spray-on fixative, otherwise closing the thing would ruin every last bit of work you've done. Charcoal pencils don't smear as much, but that ...

Oh damn if this is your first day I’m excited to see where you go with it! I find charcoal to be a great learning tool when working on figures because it’s so easy to adjust major parts of your drawing. I recommend going big with charcoal to truly unlock its magic, although you’ve got plenty of magic in that tiny one there.

Another trick I’ll use is to save the charcoal powder in a little jar (mostly from sharpening with sandpaper). You can then use a blending stump, paintbrush, etc to create different effects for laying down values and blending. I am still learning myself but maybe this could help. Have fun exploring! 3. Reply. Kneaded erasers work best with charcoal I’ve found. A normal eraser tends to smudge, but for details there are small erasers that work really well (I use mono zero’s). Paper, you’ll need to find what you like. Some like a very heavy grain and some (like me) like a fine grain.

Willow/vine, compressed sticks, and pencils are plenty to start!) You'll also want erasers, because you do a lot of drawing in negative with erasers when you're using charcoal. Kneaded erasers are great for softening edges and doing gentle transitions. Vinyl erasers are great for erasing back to the white of the paper or close to it.

It is great to mold little teeny tips to lift charcoal for detail work. Also, if you are unable to erase the light sections enough and want to add white, I really recommend a white conte crayon over your typical white charcoal pencil. I'd add it last, as fixative spray tends to darken your light areas. Vine charcoal is also great for prepping ...
