Miss Saigon is a sung-through stage musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr. It is based on Giacomo Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly, and similarly tells the tragic tale of a doomed romance involving an Asian woman abandoned by her American lover.
In 1999, Salonga starred as Sonia Walsk in the Singapore production of They're Playing Our Song, later reprising the role in the 2000 Manila production. In the same year, she also returned to the West End production of Miss Saigon as Kim to close the show as well as the Broadway production.

Lee's career began in 1995, when he was cast in the second national tour of Miss Saigon. He auditioned for the show on three occasions before he was cast.
