Berry Gordy III (born November 28, 1929), also known as Berry Gordy Jr., [5] is an American retired record executive, record producer, songwriter, film and television producer. He is best known as the founder of the Motown record label and its subsidiaries, which was the highest-earning African-American business for decades.
Anna Ruby Gaye (née Gordy; January 28, 1922 – January 31, 2014) was an American businesswoman, composer and songwriter.An elder sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy, she became a record executive in the mid-to-late 1950s distributing records released on Checker and Gone Records before forming the Anna label with Billy Davis and her sister Gwen Gordy Fuqua.
Berry Gordy I was the son of Georgia slave owner James Thomas Gordy and one of his female slaves, Esther Johnson. In addition, James Gordy had a son, James Jackson Gordy, with his legal wife; as the father of Lillian Gordy Carter, the younger James was the maternal grandfather of former U.S. president Jimmy Carter, making Jimmy and Berry III and his siblings second half-cousins. Gordy placed her in charge of the company's publishing operations (now known as Jobete) with the assistance of her brother, Mike Ossman, and Janie Bradford, the company's first receptionist. [6] After the birth of their child, Kerry, and his divorce from his previous wife was final, Ray and Berry Gordy were married. [6]
Gordy is also the biological mother of Marvin Gaye III, who was born on November 17, 1965, when she was a teenager. His biological father, singer Marvin Gaye, was 26 years old and married to Gordy's 43-year-old aunt Anna at the time. She agreed to give birth to the child because her aunt was unable to conceive.
Thelma Records was a record label in Detroit, Michigan from 1962 until 1966. Recordings included Emanuel Laskey, Eddie Hill, Rose Battiste, Richard Street & the Distants, Alberta Adams, The Fabulous Peps [1] and Martha Star. [2]
At Anna Records, Fuqua began working with Anna Gordy, Billy Davis, Lamont Dozier and Johnny Bristol. [1] He also introduced Marvin Gaye to Anna's brother, Berry Gordy, and married their sister Gwen Gordy. [3] In 1961, he started his own labels, Tri-Phi Records and Harvey Records, whose acts included the Spinners, Junior Walker and Shorty Long. [1]
Silberstein was married to Diana Ross from 1971 to 1977. [5] They have two daughters together, Tracee Ellis Ross and Chudney Ross. [8] Diana Ross has one daughter from a previous relationship, Rhonda Ross Kendrick, whose biological father is Motown founder Berry Gordy, and who was born a few months after Silberstein and Ross married.
