RE: Tohatsu/Nissan outboard reliability. My last boat had a 50HP Nissan oil injected main motor and a 8HP kicker. Both were purchased new with the boat in 1999. The main lasted 2800 hours before it quit. I kicked a rod bearing at that point in time this was 2006, when it died and was replaced by a E-tech then a Suzuki.

I carry a 2.5 Tohatsu in the bow of my boat when I'm in the Everglades as an insurance policy. Had it for 13 years and normally use it on the Gheenoe, Had a Tohatsu 25 on a pontoon boat for 12 years and it was trouble free. Tohatsu is the largest manufacturer of outboard motors in the world. Very reliable.

I have the 2022 Tohatsu 140 that is actually made by Tohatsu. I've only had it a month but so far I am very pleased with it. I have it on a 17.5' deep v aluminum and it gets up and goes. The only downside of the motor so far is that literally EVERYONE asks about it at gas stations and boat launches. Courtesy_Flush.

2 crank the motor while holding the key in, try it a couple of times. 3 if it doesn't fire, give the bulb a couple of more pumps, the fuel system needs pressure to prime when you are holding the key in. 4 repeat #2, should fire, if it is stumbling, push the key in for a couple seconds at a time till it smooths out.

  7. Is it really that difficult to rebuild an outboard?

    www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/16357-really-difficult-rebuild-outboard.html

I was answering his question - quote: Cost effective - probably not. The other information was laying out a scenario when it might be worth rebuilding a motor yourself. Like when you have a motor given to you (with controls) with about 600 hours on that ate the top cylinder due to a lean burn condition.

JMarkB. The Boating Forum - Suzuki outboard quality - Guys I went to a boat show this weekend and found a 22 foot bay boat that I really like. It comes with a 175 hp Suzuki. Just talked to a friend of mine and he advised me that those motors are complete junk. I'll a little gun shy but trying to close on the boat this week.

Him and I had ran this motor alot on his 14ft kaboat.

They are the first 4 stroke over 100 hp on the market. That said, their hp to weight numbers are way off todays standards, but in 1998 it was the only game in town. They are a truly commercial grade motor, lots of block there and the lower units were robust. There are dozens of those motors out there nearing 10k hours.

My perception of ISO standards is it is a "manufacturing" quality standard for a particular company. since many of the components are outsourced, "manufacturing" becomes "assembly and finish".
