A sail plan is a drawing of a sailing craft, viewed from the side, depicting its sails, the spars that carry them and some of the rigging that supports the rig. [1] By extension, "sail plan" describes the arrangement of sails on a craft. [2] [3] A sailing craft may be waterborne (a ship or boat), an iceboat, or a sail-powered land vehicle.
Spar (sailing) – pole of wood, metal or lightweight materials such as carbon fibre used in the rigging of a sailing vessel to carry or support its sail. These include booms and masts, which serve both to deploy sail and resist compressive and bending forces, as well as the bowsprit and spinnaker pole. Boom; Bowsprit; Boomkin
It was 55 feet (17 m) long, with an 8-foot (2.4 m) beam, and with a shallow draft. The mast was 32 feet (9.8 m) high and could be lowered. The boat could carry a headsail and a square rigged sail. A 10-foot (3.0 m) long deck at the bow made a forecastle. A raised aftercastle of the same length contained a cabin. The hold had a capacity of 12 ...
The Tancook schooner, with its counter stern and characteristic round, or "spoon", bow was a distinctive type of small sailing work boat built primarily on Big Tancook Island, Nova Scotia, and the immediate surrounding area on and near Mahone Bay. The design succeeded the earlier double-ended Tancook whaler fishing boats.
Its sail plan consists of a single mast with a main sail and two foresails. Traditionally, the boat is black (being coated in pitch) and the sails are a dark red-brown. From the late 20th century, there has been a revival of and renewed interest in the Galway hooker, and the boats are still being constructed.
Filled with wind, the sail has a roughly spherical polygon shape and if the shape is stable, then the location of centre of effort is stable. On sailing craft with multiple sails, the position of centre of effort varies with the sail plan. Sail trim or airfoil profile, boat trim and point of sail also affect CE.
The high aspect ratio sail plan has better upwind performance characteristics over the lateen sail, changing the boat's handling to point more like other Bermuda rig sailboats in its size. With this configuration, complexity of sail control is elevated by the addition of dynamic outhaul, downhaul, and mainsheet traveller lines.
