Generation III Extended Cold Weather Clothing System ECWCS levels 7 (left) and 5 (right). The Extended Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWCS / ˈ ɛ k w æ k s /) is a protective clothing system developed in the 1980s by the United States Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, Natick, Massachusetts.
Pilots and aircrew typically wear flight suits and flight jackets, as well as g-suit, pressure suits, and life vests as needed. Various gloves are offered by the Corps. Often, most Marines receive simply a woolen liner and leather shell, however, those who require more specialized gloves are issued them (cold weather, hazmat, Mechanix brand, etc.).
The most recognizable part of the uniform is the standardized field jacket. It was longer than the M-1941 jacket, coming down to the upper thighs, had a detachable hood, drawstring waist, two large breast pockets and two skirt pockets. It was colored olive drab shade no. 7 (OD7), a darker and greener shade than the previous field jacket. [1]
The jacket was modeled after a civilian windbreaker design, and was constructed of an olive drab shade 2 cotton poplin outer shell with a dark olive drab blanket wool flannel lining, with shell color on new jackets was a pale pea-green color, but faded fairly quickly with heavy use and sun exposure to the more common beige-green.
The M-1951 field jacket was based on the M-1943 field jacket. [2] The M-1951 was given snap fasteners instead of buttons and an aluminium zipper.Earlier issue M-1951s had larger, brown buttons like on the M-1943, and later jackets had smaller brown, then green buttons as used on the M-1965 field jacket and later OG-107 fatigues.
The term “shell” jacket is of British origin, appearing during the 1790s, when light dragoons adopted a dark blue short jacket with a decorative sleeveless over-jacket or “shell” on top. Though short-lived, the name stuck and was later to be applied to waist-length, sleeved fatigue jackets from about 1800.
