The school was started by the School Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Joliet; who staffed the St. Francis de Sales parish schools, starting in 1893. In the late 1890s the school began to offer high school courses, though the school did not become a four-year high school, until 1937.
The Academy was an integral part of the sisters' ministry in Chicago. The sisters publish a biannual newsletter, Sacro Speco. Founded in 1902, St. Benedict School in 1950 expanded to include a high school. In February 2017 St. Benedict Preparatory School announced it would be closing its high school. The last graduating class was in June 2019. [1] St. Benedict Preparatory will continue its mission to serve families with Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 8 children.
The predecessor of the school, Cathedral College of the Sacred Heart, was founded in 1905. Cardinal George Mundelein announced plans in 1916 for the building of a preparatory seminary at Rush and Chestnut streets in downtown Chicago, and named the school in honor of his predecessor, Archbishop James Edward Quigley. The school was established by the Loreto Sisters and opened in August 1906. [1] The school admitted its first African-American students in 1949. [2] As Woodlawn's demographics changed in the 1950s, the school's did as well. [3] By 1960, it had only ten Euro-American students and by the early 1970s it had a completely African-American student body.
