Jabiru protection was the Belize Audubon Society's first advocacy project. In 1973 the Jabiru was added to Belize's list of protected animals. Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, the first Wildlife Sanctuary declared by the Government of Belize, was gazetted on December 8, 1984. [3]
It operates wholly within Belize under license and support from the Government of Belize Forest Department. The main focus of the organisation is the rehabilitation for release of wild-caught psittacines (parrots) liberated from the illegal local pet trade. As of July 2017, Belize Bird Rescue has returned almost 1000 ex-captive parrots to the wild.
There are currently seven wildlife sanctuaries, three of which are being managed under co-management partnerships, whilst the other four are managed under informal arrangements.
