The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railroad (reporting mark CNSM), also known as the North Shore Line, was an interurban railroad that operated passenger and freight service over an 88.9-mile (143.1 km) route between the Chicago Loop and downtown Milwaukee, as well as an 8.6-mile (13.8 km) branch line between the villages of Lake Bluff and Mundelein, Illinois.
The line was formally abandoned in 2019, with the City of Chicago acquiring the rights to reactivate rail service while at the same time pursuing conversion of the line to a rail trail. Twelve wood cars were leased from the North Shore Line in 1936 then bought in 1945. [8] [9] [10] After passenger service ended in 1957 passenger cars were stored and maintained at the Wheaton yard, in case service could be resumed. Freight service continued until 1959, with only locomotives 2001 and 2002 in service.
During reconstruction the station was accessed from a temporary structure to the east of the original entry. The staging area and job offices for the project are located just north of the Belmont station. Construction of support systems for the project and demolition of adjacent structures started in 2006, although this was not without controversy.
The station is 2.9 miles (4.7 km) away from Union Station, the inbound terminus of the line. [ 3 ] Western Avenue station serves the Milwaukee District West Line , North Central Service , and Milwaukee District North Line , and is the last inbound stop for these three lines before the terminus at Union Station.
