Pioneer Stadium hosted the Cal State Hayward Pioneers football (back when the school was called California State University, Hayward). While the football team has historical success, most notably the 1969 team with a 9–1 record, [ 3 ] the team later discontinued in 1993 due to financial issues and poor attendance.
Led by eighth-year head coach Tim Tierney, Cal State Hayward compiled an overall record of 4–5–1 with a mark of 3–2 in conference play, tying for second place in the NCAC. The team outscored its opponents 240 to 236 for the season. The Pioneers played home games at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, California.

Davis resigned from his post at Cal State Hayward in February 1971 to become the head football coach at New Mexico Highlands University. In five years under Davis, the Pioneers won the conference title once (1969), shared the conference title once (1970) and finished with an overall record of 30–20–1, for a .598 winning percentage.
