The Lochaber Narrow Gauge Railway was a 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge industrial railway.It was a relatively long line, built for the construction and subsequent maintenance of a 15-mile-long (24-kilometre) tunnel from Loch Treig to a factory near Fort William in Scotland. [1]
The dam is 914 metres (2,999 ft) long, the longest in the Highlands. The hydroelectric scheme was constructed in the early 1900s for the British Aluminium Company for the purpose of smelting aluminium and was designed by engineers Patrick Meik and Charles Meik. Chief assistant resident engineer was William Halcrow.

A visitor centre, "The Aluminium Story", tells the story of the creation of the village to serve the aluminium smelting facility. There is a hostel, microlodge facility and campsite close to the river. It has eight microlodges comprising a mixture of two and four berth accommodation. There are toilets, showers and dishwashing facilities.
