Flemington recorded a population of 7,025 at the 2021 census. [1] Flemington is located between the Maribyrnong River and the Moonee Ponds Creek and includes the locality of Newmarket, in which the main commercial area Racecourse Road is located. The suburb was named by settler James Watson after Flemington Estate in Scotland.

Historically, Flemington Post Office of 1889 was the first in a series of major public buildings, including the Court House and Police Station, sited in the post-gold growth centre of Flemington. Built to replace an earlier post office operating from at least 1869, the building was sited to one side of an old gold rush trekking route.
