Northampton Golf Club is a golf club and course in Harlestone, to the northwest of Northampton and immediately to the southeast of Althorp, in Northamptonshire, England. The club was established on 1 July 1893. [1] Three of the holes, the 16th to the 18th, are set around Harlestone Lake. [2]
A number of large modern houses are an integral part of the golf course. The course was designed by The Open and U.S. Open champion Johnny Miller . The area is close to other facilities in East Hunsbury and near to the A45 road (re-numbered from the A508 road in the early 21st century) and within a mile of M1 junction 15.
The county entered the Minor Counties Championship in 1895 and competed in the competition until 1904, after which it was elevated to first-class status for the 1905 season. It has since played first-class cricket from 1905, List A cricket from 1963 and Twenty20 cricket from 2003, using a different number of home grounds during that time.
The 1820 date, if it could be verified, would make Northants the oldest club in the present-day County Championship. The club came to prominence in the Minor Counties Championship during the 1890s as, between 1900 and 1904, the bowling of George Thompson and William East was much too good for almost all batsmen at that level.
