Desert Orchid (11 April 1979 – 13 November 2006 [1] [2]), known as Dessie, [1] was an English racehorse. The grey achieved a revered and esteemed status within National Hunt racing, where he was much loved by supporters for his front-running attacking style, iron will and extreme versatility. [3]
The more highly graded races attract more prize money and better horses. (In flat racing the more prestigious races are Group 1, 2, and 3, then Listed). On his first appearance of the 2015/2016 National Hunt season Nichols Canyon was one of five horses to contest the Grade I Morgiana Hurdle over two miles at Punchestown on 15 November. The 1/6 favourite was the undefeated Champion Hurdler Faugheen , who, as the Mullins' stable's star hurdler was ridden by Ruby Walsh.
Arkle was set to carry just one pound more than Flyingbolt in all three races with a gap of more than 2 stone (28lbs) to the next horse in the weights. Flemensfirth was a bay horse bred by the Mill Ridge Farm at Lexington, Kentucky. He was sired by the dual Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Alleged out of the Diesis mare Etheldreda. [ 1 ] He was bought as a yearling for $290,000 [ 2 ] by Sheikh Mohammed and sent into training with John Gosden in England.
