The following are approximate tallies of current listings by county. These counts are based on entries in the National Register Information Database as of April 24, 2008 [ 2 ] and new weekly listings posted since then on the National Register of Historic Places web site. [ 3 ]
Aroostook County is known for its potato cultivation, and it is an emerging hub for wind power. Historically, Acadian culture and heritage is well-represented in the county. In the Saint John Valley (northern Aroostook county), which borders Madawaska County, New Brunswick, many of the residents are bilingual in English and Acadian French.
At the 2000 census, there were 117 people in 42 households, including 33 families, on the plantation. The population density was 3.0 people per square mile (1.2/km 2). There were 51 housing units at an average density of 1.3 per square mile (0.5/km 2). The racial makeup of the plantation was 94.02% white, and 5.98% from two or more races. [7]

The Aroostook County Historical and Art Museum is located at 109 Main Street, in the White Memorial Building, in Houlton, Maine. The museum was founded in 1937, after the building, a handsome 1903 Colonial Revival house, was donated to the town by the White family. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [1]
