San Rafael has an area of 48.39 km² [4] and a mean elevation of 1,343 metres. [ 2 ] The canton is northeast of the provincial capital city of Heredia , reaching from the suburbs high into the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range).
Both the Nacimiento and Big Pine Faults run through the wilderness, roughly parallelling the Sierra Madre and San Rafael Mountain crests respectively. Hurricane Deck is a single block of Miocene-age sedimentary rock. Immediately south of the wilderness, opposite the Big Pine and Camuesa Faults, is a large region of the Franciscan Formation.
Most of the mountain range is within the Los Padres National Forest, and the northern slopes are included in the remote San Rafael Wilderness area.. The highest peaks include Big Pine Mountain (6,820 ft; 2,080 m), [2] San Rafael Mountain (6,593 ft; 2,010 m) [3] and McKinley Mountain (6,220 ft; 1,900 m), [4] none of which are easily accessible except by foot or horse.
One of its main economic activities is the plantation of cypress, used as Christmas trees in Costa Rica. Along with its immediate neighbors San Ramón District and Mata de Plátano District, it forms one of the main cypress production areas in all the Costa Rican Central Region. [7]
