The greeting in the card can be personalized but brief, or may include a summary of the year's news. The extreme of this is the Christmas letter (below). Because cards are usually exchanged year after year, the phrase "to be off someone's Christmas card list" is used to indicate a falling out between friends or public figures.
The round-robin letter has been the subject of much ridicule, particularly from the Guardian journalist Simon Hoggart, who pilloried examples of the genre in his newspaper column, as well as writing the book The Hamster That Loved Puccini: The Seven Modern Sins of Christmas Round-robin Letters. A Christmas special of America's Funniest Home Videos released in 1999, "Unwrapped for the Holidays" hosted by actor Richard Kind, features a video of preschoolers performing the song at a concert. As part of the concert, children showed a card with a letter in "Christmas" to the audience as each lyric about a particular letter was sung.
