This Mingachevir water reservoir was created on the Kura river. The construction of the Mingachevir reservoir and the Hydroelectric Power Station was completed in 1953. The total capacity of the reservoir at the normal level (83 m) is 15730 mln m 3, useful volume of it is 8210 mln m3.
The total volume of the reservoir is 2,677 million m 3, and the operating volume of water is 1425 million m 3. It is the second largest reservoir in the Caucasus after the Mingachevir reservoir. The normal water level in the tank is 158 m, and the surface area is 115 km 2.
The Araz River along the Iranian border with Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. Rivers form the principal part of the water systems of Azerbaijan. There are 8,359 rivers of various lengths within Azerbaijan. Of them, 8,188 rivers are less than 25 kilometres (16 mi) long. Only 24 rivers are over 100 kilometres (62 mi) long.
Azerbaijan is a country with very favorable natural conditions and rich natural resources. Snowy peaks, high mountains, foothill fertile soils, wide plains, Lowest Land Points Below Ocean Level are the main landscape forms of the republic.
The reservoir's water level is maintained by the dam of the Mingachevir Hydro Power Plant, built near Mount Bozdağ from 1945 to 1953. [8] It is the largest hydroelectric power station of Azerbaijan, with an installed electric capacity of 401.6 megawatts. [9]
The Aras River along the Iranian border with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. This is a list of rivers of Azerbaijan. The hydrography of Azerbaijan basically belongs to the Caspian Sea drainage basin to which all rivers in Azerbaijan flow to. [1] The Caspian Sea is an endorheic basin, having no outflows to an ocean. [1]
The reservoir is 52 kilometres (32 mi) long and 6.1 kilometres (3.8 mi) wide. The average depth at normal water levels is 18.2 metres (60 ft). [6] There are a total of four hydroelectric stations in Azerbaijan and Iran (two on each side) with four turbines. The discharge capacity of one spillway of a station is 66.5 m 3 /s (2,350 cu ft/s). [6]
The overall area is about 56.2 km 2 (21.7 sq mi) and the volume of water in the lake is 44.7 million m 3. [8] The average water depth of 0.8 m, maximum depth being 2.5 m. Water levels tend to be lowest in August. With the arrival of fall, the level rises and reaches its maximum during the rain season in the spring.
