Jack Murphy (February 5, 1923 – September 24, 1980) was a sportswriter and columnist for the San Diego Union newspaper from 1951–1980. Jack Murphy Stadium was named in his honor. He was affectionately referred to by fans simply as "The Murph" and "El Murph" by Spanish speakers.
The Union-Tribune was formed in 1992 through a merger of the San Diego Union (established 1868) and the San Diego Evening Tribune (established 1881). Jerome Field Magee (April 11, 1928 – January 2, 2019) was an American newspaper columnist. Magee was a sports writer in San Diego for 52 years, retiring from the San Diego Union-Tribune in 2008. [1] He began his career more than five decades earlier at the then-San Diego Union and also wrote for Pro Football Weekly. [2]
