The company was founded in 1920 by Sam and Jessie Levin in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania as a general sales clearance center. [1] In the 1940s, the Levin family phased out other items in order to concentrate on furniture. Leonard Levin, son of Sam and Jessie, joined the company during this time and eventually became president.

The company was founded as a housewares manufacturer in 1932 by Theodore Baumritter and his brother-in-law Nathan S. Ancell. They bought a bankrupt furniture factory in Beecher Falls, Vermont in 1936 and adopted the name "Ethan Allen" for its early-American furniture introduced in 1939, after the Vermont Revolutionary War leader Ethan Allen.
In 1920 Louis Darvin began selling furniture door-to-door in Chicago. [1] In 1939, Louis and son, David, opened the first Darvin Furniture store in the West Pullman neighborhood of Chicago with 5,000 square feet (465 m 2) and moved to a 25,000-square-foot (2,323 m 2) location in Pullman in 1948 before settling into a 50,000-square-foot (4,645 m 2) showroom in Chicago's Southside.
