Howard Gray Funkhouser (April 14, 1898 – Dec. 1984) was an American mathematician, historian and associate professor of mathematics at the Washington and Lee University, and later at the Phillips Exeter Academy, particularly known for his early work on the history of graphical methods.

The program's signature goal was to create a unified treatment of mathematics and eliminate the traditional separate per-year studies of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and so forth, that was typical of American secondary schools. In 1947 he joined the faculty at Howard, where David Blackwell was then chair of the department of mathematics. [8] Claytor taught at Howard until his retirement in 1965, serving as chair himself along the way. [7] On August 5, 1947, Claytor married the psychologist Mae Belle Pullins, who also shared his love of mathematics. They had one daughter.
