Braddock Road connected Cumberland, Maryland (the upper limit of navigation on the Potomac River) and the forks of the Ohio River (the future Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). It received its name from the British leader of the French and Indian War (1754–63), General Edward Braddock , who led the ill-fated Braddock expedition four years later.

Allegheny Township, established on December 6, 1795, [1] in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, was among the earliest administrative divisions in Western Pennsylvania. Covering a vast area, it included much of what would later become Armstrong County when the county was established in 1800.
The area was a weekend getaway for businessman Edward L. Ryerson, who built a cabin there in 1928. He built three other cabins for friends, and had a country house built in 1942. It is representative of the type of getaways used by successful Chicagoans who sought the tranquil surroundings of the Des Plaines River .
