Centralia is a city in Clinton, Jefferson, Marion, and Washington counties in the U.S. state of Illinois with the largest portion in Marion County. The city is the largest in three counties, Clinton, Marion, and Washington, but it is not a county seat for any of them. The population was 12,182 as of the 2020 census, down from 13,032 in 2010. [4]
Centralia's business district developed around the Illinois Central Railroad tracks, as the town was established by and named for the railroad. The earliest buildings in the district date from the 1850s, as the city was platted in 1853.

Public transit has existed in South Central Illinois since at least 1892, when the Centralia & Central City Street Railway Co. began operating horsecar service in Centralia. Streetcar service was operated locally in Centralia and Mt. Vernon until 1930 and 1917 respectively, when both cities had their streetcar systems replaced with buses. [2]
The new $100,611 station was funded by the city, the Centralia Foundation, the Centralia Area Development Association and the Great American Stations Foundation. [3] The station is a flag stop on the City of New Orleans route, served only when passengers have tickets to and from the station.
