Charles W. Baker Airport is on a 259-acre (1.05 km 2) plot of land. It has an asphalt runway 18/36 that is 3,500 x 75 feet (1,066.8 x 28.7 meters) and handles up to 25,000 lb (11,000 kg). Runway 18U/36U, which used to be designed solely for ultra-light aircraft , was 1,600 x 75 feet (487.7 x 28.7 m) but is now closed.
Opened on November 24, 2007 and hailed as the first major rapid rail service of any kind in North Carolina, the line has 15 stations and ran 9.6 miles (15.4 km) between I-485/South Boulevard, near Pineville, and 7th Street, in Uptown Charlotte; the line was partly shared with the Charlotte Trolley from 2008–2010.
Charlotte was established in 1804 by an act of the state legislature as the county seat for Dickson County, which had been created in 1803. The town was named for Charlotte Reeves Robertson, the wife of General James Robertson, who played prominent roles in the settlement of Middle Tennessee.
