Despite the 4.9L I6's bulletproof design, the old inline engine earned anywhere from "poor" (black dot) to "average" (white dot) during the 80s and 90s, but never did earn at least "above average" (half-red, half white dot). I have yet to find anyone having any problems (or gasket failures) with this engine in 2004-2008.
Your choice should be easier than that. Docnick November 19, 2009, 9:48pm 3. There are many happy owners with Ford 4.2 liter V6 engines. However, I have also heard about head gasket problems with this engine. Consulting the Consumer reports history, I find that the Ford V6 as used in the Explorer has a better than average rating and only 2006 ...
4.2L reliability. I am thinking about getting another F-150, it's a 5 speed manual trans 4.2 L V6 1998 2WD club cab, the body itself has 185,000 miles on it but the motor has been gone through at 150,000 (new gaskets, complete tune up, things of that nature) I am just wondering how reliable the 4.2L engines are, and any known problem areas for ...
mine is a 02 that just hit 80,000. but im only getting 10mpg. I was at one time too when I replaced the gaskets and bolts I checked the egr ports 4 of 6 were clogged shut. An old work truck I had was an '02 with the 4.2 in it. Great little truck, it had 305,148 on it when I turned it in for the equipment auction.

A 07 should not have plug wires they are coil on plug more than likely just a bad coil. Not with the 4.2. It has one coil, located by the drivers side valve cover, with 6 plug wires on it's top to their respective cylinders. This coil is "one for all, all for one". If only one output is misfiring, it has to be replaced.
Timing, and fuel related issuess 4.2L V6. I recently bought a 2006 XL 4.2L V6 with 150k. Truck was running but had a FILTHY engine, and was leaking oil. So I disassembled, cleaned and resealed the entire engine replacing parts along the way. I posted about a month ago seeking advice for misfire codes I was getting.
4.2 misfire. I have a 2003 f150 4.2 a/t. at idle and lower rpm's it has an irregular, but constant misfire. I replaced the plugs about three months back, and a fuel filter about a year ago, but this just started. I pulled the plugs and they are burning fine. I just put wires and a coil pack on it this week and it is still missing.
When the engine is cold, 2003 4.2L V-6 5 speed manual trans, and I turn the key it will jump right up to an idle of between 2000 - 2500 rpm, it will begin to drop down within about 15 seconds to about 1500 - 1700 rpm, when it is warm it idles normally at about 850 rpm, but while warm if I come to a stoplight the idle drops down gradually from ...
Solved: Misfire Problem. I had what seemed like a serious problem with my engine. I was having a terrible shutter at 45-55 MPH and under load. Then, I developed a rough idle. My truck is: 2006 F-150 XL, 5.4L engine. To save someone some time, the bottom line of the problem was a faulty brand new MotorCraft spark plug.
