5083 aluminium alloy is an aluminium–magnesium alloy with magnesium and traces of manganese and chromium. It is highly resistant to attack by seawater and industrial chemicals. [1] Alloy 5083 retains exceptional strength after welding.
The side and rear hull armor consisted of two 0.25 in (6.4 mm) steel plates one inch apart and 3.5 in (89 mm) away from the aluminum armor. The hull top, bottom, and front consisted of 5083 aluminum armor, and 0.357 in (9.1 mm) steel armor was added to the front third of the hull bottom to increase mine protection. [9] [56]
Starting in 1964, the gasoline engine was replaced with a 215 hp (160 kW) 6V-53 Detroit Diesel engine, to take advantage of the better fuel economy and the reduced fire hazard of the diesel engine. [ 54 ] [ 55 ] The suffix A1 was used on all variants to denote a diesel engine, i.e. an M106A1 was an M106 mortar carrier equipped with a diesel engine.
The first number refers to the number of cylinders in the engine, followed by a hyphen or "V", indicating inline or vee cylinder block arrangements, respectively, then 53 for the Series designation, referring the nominal swept displacement per cylinder in cubic inches, rounding from 53.07 cu in (0.9 L) per cylinder.
The contact breaker is operated by an engine-driven cam.On an engine with a distributor, the contact breaker can be found beneath the distributor cap.The position of the contact breaker is set so that it opens (and hence generates a spark) at exactly the optimum moment to ignite the fuel/air mixture.
Alusil as a hypereutectic aluminium-silicon alloy (EN AC-AlSi17Cu4Mg / EN AC-48100 or A390) contains approximately 78% aluminium and 17% silicon. [1] [2] This alloy was theoretically conceived in 1927 by Schweizer & Fehrenbach, [3] of Badener Metall-Waren-Fabrik, [4] but practically created only by Lancia [5] in the same year, for its car engines.
Kaiser Aluminum Corporation is an American aluminum producer. It is a spinoff from Kaiser Aluminum and Chemicals Corporation, which came to be when common stock was offered in Permanente Metals Corporation and Permanente Metals Corporation's name was changed to Kaiser Aluminum and Chemicals Corporation.
5059 aluminium alloy is an aluminium–magnesium alloy, primarily alloyed with magnesium. It is not strengthened by heat treatment, instead becoming stronger due to strain hardening , or cold mechanical working of the material.
