Tale of Tales (Russian: Сказка сказок, Skazka skazok) is a 1979 Soviet/Russian animated film directed by Yuri Norstein [1] [2] and produced by the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow. [3] Having won numerous awards, acclaimed by both critics and animators, various polls have recognized it as the greatest animated film of all time. [ 4 ]
The series consists of 26 episodes, each one adapting a popular fairy tale or a literature classic written by a famous author such as: the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Andersen, Carlo Collodi, Lewis Carroll, Alexandre Dumas, Howard Pyle, Jonathan Swift, Johanna Spyri, L. Frank Baum, E. T. A. Hoffmann, James Halliwell-Phillipps and Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.
The season premiered on 11 January 2019 and ended on 5 April 2019. Beginning on 4 May 2020, the show began airing in America on WOWPresents Plus, with English subtitles. The DVD is now out of print. The film eventually received a region-free Blu-ray in Korea on October 14, 2013. Though the disc also offers English subtitles, the extras are all in Korean. [7] [8] [9] In 2023, Umbrella Entertainment is scheduled to release the film on Blu-Ray in June 2023.
