Ficus plant grown under a white LED grow light. A grow light is an electric light that can help plants grow. Grow lights either attempt to provide a light spectrum similar to that of the sun, or to provide a spectrum that is more tailored to the needs of the plants being cultivated (typically a varying combination of red and blue light, which generally appears pink to purple to the human eye).
Place the bulbs in the soil with the pointed sides up, making sure to plant each bulb close together. Cover small bulbs with a 1/2-inch of soil and larger bulbs up to their tips. Water the bulbs well.
For indoor gardening, one of the most important requirements is the amount of light energy striking the surface of the plant ("incident light"), which can be measured in lux (lux = lumens / area illuminated in square metres). For indoor use, higher lighting efficiency produces more lumens per unit of area with less power and less waste heat.
While plants have adapted to the reception of real sunlight, full spectrum light bulbs often mimic the emphasis of wavelengths of sunlight enough that plants are stimulated to grow. Full spectrum lighting also enhances the natural coloration of fish, plants and other aquatic elements in an aquarium, which are often discolored by artificial lights.
Get a grow light if you don't have eight to 12 hours of bright indoor light. Water when the soil is dry about two inches deep (you can stick your finger in to check).
To plant the bulbs, fill a tall glass vase with rocks, and then add water so it covers the tops of the pebbles and just the base of the bulb is resting in the water.
