Nineteen Eighty-Four (also published as 1984) is a dystopian novel and cautionary tale by English writer George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime.
After several publishing contracts fell through, the book was finally published in January 1984 by Picador, and separately by Grove Press the same year. During initial publication, both imprints accidentally reversed the intended order of the final two sections; this was corrected in Grove's 2017 anniversary edition. [1]
