Orchard Mesa is in central Mesa County, on the southeast side of the city of Grand Junction, the county seat. It is bordered to the north by the Colorado River and to the southwest by the Gunnison River, its tributary. U.S. Route 50 passes through the community, leading northwest into Grand Junction and southeast 37 miles (60 km) to Delta.
The route then junctions with U.S. Highway 550 and turns east onto the San Juan Avenue bypass and then onto Main St. heading eastward out of Montrose. The highway is a four-lane expressway from the Utah border to the eastern boundary of Montrose except for surface streets in the towns of Grand Junction, Delta and Montrose.
The byway continues past Island Lake, one of more than 300 trout-filled lakes in Grand Mesa National Forest. On the north side of the Mesa are the towns of Mesa, Collbran, and Powderhorn Ski Resort.
