The history of Monument Avenue dates to 1887, when it was decided to place a monument to Robert E. Lee in a field west of the city of Richmond. [3] The area surrounding the monument was platted and sold to speculators, and city services were extended to the vicinity, but the panic of 1893 cooled the real estate market. [3]
Veterans' health care in the United States is separated geographically into 19 regions (numbered 1, 2, 4–10, 12 and 15–23) [1] known as VISNs, or Veterans Integrated Service Networks, into systems within each network headed by medical centers, and hierarchically within each system by division level of care or type.
That area of the county, about 6 miles (10 km) from downtown Richmond in the Southside area, was annexed by the independent city in 1970. The facility was the first Veterans Administration hospital to perform heart transplant surgery in the 1970s, under the leadership of Dr. Szabolcs Szentpetery. [3]
In 2004, the name of this authority was changed to the VCU Health System, and the MCV Hospitals and surrounding campus were named the VCU Medical Center. The authority oversees the employees and real estate occupied by the five schools within the VCU Medical Center. It was at this time that the MCV Campus moniker was created.
Over the years, the hospital expanded to help serve the community, growing from an initial size of 169 beds and only 250 employees. Today, St. Mary's has evolved into a state-of-the-art 391-bed facility. The hospital continues to serve the community with the philosophy of good help to those in need, especially the poor and dying.
