St. Andrew's had another long-serving priest in Msgr. James Hourihan, a native of Ireland, educated at All Hallows College, Dublin, who served at St. Andrew's first as assistant pastor from 1931-1936 and then as pastor for 27 years from 1955 to 1982. [10] In 1986, Msgr. Hourihan published a 224-page history of St. Andrew's parish.

The diocese's first bishop Henry J. Richter chose Saint Andrew's as his cathedral and was consecrated in it on April 22, 1883. [2] Lightning struck the cathedral in 1901 and a fire destroyed part of the church building. It was rebuilt and expanded. Some of the wooden beams above the ceiling still show the charred marks from the fire.
