Chrysler developed its first experimental hemi engine for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. The XIV-2220 was an inverted V16 rated at 2,500 hp (1,860 kW). The P-47 was already in production with a Pratt & Whitney radial engine when the XIV-2220 flew successfully in trials in 1945 as a possible upgrade, but the war was winding down and it did not go into production.
This engine shares the same stroke length as the other engines but has a smaller bore size of 3.52 in (89 mm) and lower compression ratio of 8.0:1. It ran on regular petrol and produced 104 kW (139 hp) at 4400 rpm and 270 N⋅m (199 lb⋅ft) of torque at a low 1800 rpm. Specifications:

The Magnum had four engine options; the SE features the 190 hp 2.72 L LH V6, the SXT had the 250 hp (190 kW) 3.5 L V6, and the RT had the new 340 hp 5.7 L Hemi V8. The SRT-8 has a 425 hp 6.1 L Hemi engine. All-wheel drive became an option in 2005 on SXT and RT models.
The base engine was a 318 cu in (5.2 L) V8 with a three-speed manual transmission, while automatic and floor-mounted manual transmissions were optional. Larger and more powerful engines were available up to the 426 cu in (7.0 L) Hemi V8. Positioned as a sports-type luxury model, sales of the 1966 and 1967 Chargers were low.

The 5.7 L HEMI engine for 2005-2008 has slightly less horsepower than those found in the Dodge Ram or the Dodge Charger (330 vs 345) due to different engine control unit (ECU) programming. The 5.7 L HEMI engine for 2009 and up was upgraded with Variable Cam Timing (VCT) adding 27 hp (20 kW; 27 PS) and 14 lb⋅ft (19 N⋅m) of torque.
The 425 SAE net horsepower of the modern 6.1 L Hemi makes it more powerful than the Chrysler Hemi engines of the muscle car era, the biggest of which were rated at 425 SAE gross horsepower. This made the 6.1 L Hemi the most powerful V8 engine that Chrysler had put in a production vehicle at the time.
