UTMC first opened its doors on August 7, 1956, as the University of Tennessee Memorial Hospital. Neyland Drive is named for Robert Neyland, who served three stints as the Tennessee Volunteers football coach between 1926 and 1952. He also served as an officer in the United States Army, reaching the rank of brigadier general.
