Parliament Street was created in the early 1760s by the Wide Streets Commission to open up a direct route to Dublin Castle with retail buildings on either side. [1] It was the first project to be undertaken by the Commission, created after an Act of Parliament, [2] and was the origin of the name.
Though Parliament itself was based on the exclusion of the vast Irish Catholic majority in Ireland, many nationalist historians and writers blamed the absence of Parliament for Dublin's increased impoverishment, with many of the large mansions in areas like Henrietta Street sold to property developers and landlords who reduced them to tenements.

Parliament Street had been laid-out in 1753, [4] providing a continuation of Capel Street on the north bank of the Liffey, across the newly widened Essex Bridge.
